San Diego's Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach, popularly known as OB is a beachfront in San Diego, California. Located on the Southern California Pacific coastline near the estuary of San Diego River, it is situated about 7 miles from Downtown San Diego. A concrete walkway spans most of the length of the one-mile beach that has a restaurant and bait shop at the pier.
The northern end of the waterfront has a Dog Beach especially demarcated for leash-free pets. Don't miss the commemorative plaque at the entrance highlighting the first leash-free dog beach of US. It speaks volumes for this conservative place that loves living it up the good old way.
The beachfront community actually appears to be in a time warp with locally owned shops oozing familiarity and bonhomie. Local events are celebrated in spirit and style. Watch out for Ocean Beach Street Fair or Chili Cookoff in June, Jazz Festival in September, Ocean Beach Christmas Parade in December and Ocean Beach Kite Festival on the first Saturday of March.
Enjoy the sounds of breakers with the cacophony of feral parrots that thrive here. Called O.B. Air Force by OB-ceans the birds are especially active and vocal at sunrise and sunset. Enjoy volleyball, swimming, fishing and walking. Separate waters are reserved for swimming and surfing with lifeguards ever around.
